Maestro FZ-1S Super Fuzz-Tone

I did an etch of the General Guitar Gadgets clone and started populating it today. I wanted to jot down some notes I came across at DIYSB that I may need to refer back to.

To help achieve utility gain replace R12 (10k) with something more like 68k-100K.

“finished another unit this time with 2n5088s (Hfe about 500), BC548B(Hfe about 250) for clipping and BC550C for Q4 (Hfe about 680). It is the best sounding unit of the 3 i have built. And the sustain is really smooth.”

Finally got around to populating this to replace my vero version. More and more I find that I LOVE board mounted pots. That is all…

This is a great early 1960’s vibrato effect taken from the Magnatone amp that was known for having that amazing wobbly sound.

Madbean Boneyard II & Thunderpuss

20130910-201246.jpg

This is a populated Madbean Boneyard II pedal. This thing with some humbuckers really does sound like a classic 60’s Marshall amp. The breakup on this thing is really warm sounding and not shrill at all.

Looks like I need to do a bit more wet sanding on this PCB… I was thinking of adding a Madbean Thunderpuss to the input of the Boneyard for a nice clean boost. I will test it out before I box it up in a 1590BB.

Midwayfair’s Listening notes on diodes

I wanted to archive this for later reference. This was taken from a post on Madbean’s forum by Jon (Midwayfair)

Note that I have included notes of some diodes that I’m not selling (and some that you won’t be buying, like 1N914s and other 10c diodes). I included them for sound comparisons, and because they are diodes many people here will be familiar with.

Due to extremely limited stock on some of these, I may not be able to honor all requests for trios. I am working on getting more of some of the great sounding ones.

Please check the data sheets for Fv characteristics. Fv does not, however, tell the whole story, and several diodes in the same clipping range sound similar.

Leslie Simulator

I have been looking for a decent Leslie emulation pedal that doesn’t sound to “tremelo” sounding and more “movement” to it. My father and I both really like the Strymon Lex but $299 poses a problem right now. I decided to try to build one that doesn’t sound to digital/fake. I know I will not be able to achieve the same quality/sound as the Lex but I may get some usable results.

I decided to first try the General Guitar Gadgets Leslie Simulator and found a nice layout by Guero at Handmades.

I had 80% of the parts but I am playing the waiting game for the rest.

A wonderful 4 knob Fuzz Face that I plan on making one bass heavy/face melting fuzz madness machine. And it will probably look pretty also.

Stay tuned
