Transistor Sorting

I spent a good chunk of time sorting and pairing up transistors from the large lot I got last month. I am really happy with the assortment I got and about 90% came in pairs if not duplicate pairs. I also have quite a few transistors to use in Fuzz Faces and other vintage fuzzs. Now I just need to get a order of some capacitors and pry for some cooler weather.

Bad weather makes for no motivation

Its been in the 100’s here and I just can’t get motivated to build anyhting. I have actually been reading a lot and taking on the project of organizing a few file cabinets to digital storage. Hope to get some builds done soon.

Vintage Transistor Lot Acquired

This came in the mail today. Transistors sprinkled with a bit of diodes.

I won a “lot auction” on eBay and picked all these up for $100. Which I thought was a steal since the guy had some high quality photos and I seen everything from NKT’s to OC’s to 2N’s & BC’s and much more…. all usable. 95% are NOS and has never been introduced to soldier.

I decided to give my Peak Atlas DCA Pro a workout and get these things sorted.

I am compiling a list of what I got and what the voltages are. Next I am starting a list of builds.

Allen Bradley Resistors

I am trying to get some info together on these old carbon composite resistors. I would like to start making some boards in Eagle CAD that will use these parts so I will need to alter the resistor catalog parts a bit to compensate for the larger body sizes. I mainly want to use the 1/4 – 1 watt capacitors for pedals and saving the 1 – 2 watt for tube amps. More into to come soon.

Resistor madness!

Picked up a 2000+ lot of Allen Bradley resistors. It’s got everything from 1/8 to 2 watt rating. Now comes the fun part of organizing them.

Been super busy…

Work has been killing me the last 2 weeks and I have had no time/desire to work on any pedals. I have been playing a lot more this week and making some decisions on new hardware and what will be kept and sold.

I have ordered quite a few PCBs from various people online as they come in stock and available. I am also working on my first double sided PCB to submit to OSH Park.

Here are the new PCBs I have in had at the moment waiting to be built:

  • 1776Effects Five O’Clock Fuzz (Modded Fuzz Face)
  • 1776Effects Multiplex Jr. (EchoPlex Like)
  • 1776Effects Cardinal Tremolo
  • GrindCustomsFX Tenebrion Reverb

Trying out some new strings

I have been looking for some nice fatter strings that have a great low end and still have the ability to pull off bends on the higher end. I love the sound of 10’s and 11’s but find it hard to pull off any bends without killing the fingers. I started looking at the Ernie Ball Hybrid series and found these.

Gauges:

  • 2255 Extra Slinky 8-11-14-22-30-38
  • 2253 Super Slinky 9-11-16-24-32-42
  • 2252 Hybrid Slinky 9-11-16-26-36-46
  • 2251 Regular Slinky 10-13-17-26-36-46
  • 2250 Power Slinky 11-14-18p-28-38-48

So as you can see from above that the Hybrids are the best of both worlds.

Bulk parts Tip

Simple but effective tip.

When I buy bulk parts they always come in a strand with paper to hold all the parts together. I used to pull each part out of the paper one by one when I first started this adventure. Then I started to used a pair of side cutters to cut off each part but now I think I found a better way.

Things needed:
Stranded parts of course
Sheet metal snips or tin cutters (got mine from Harbor Freight)
Pair of hands to hold the parts

Here is the basics

I fold up the parts and cut off one side of the paper/card stock.

I then hold the, in this case resistors in my left hand so I am holding all of then so I don’t drop any. I then cut off the other side of the paper/card stock leaving all the loose resistors in my hand.

I place my resistors in my organizer and throw away the paper/card stock.
